Overview

History & context

Turret 47A (Foultown) is one of the regularly spaced stone watch towers built into the curtain of Hadrian's Wall, sited in the central sector west of Greatchesters (Aesica) fort, between Milecastles 47 and 48. Like other turrets on this stretch, it was constructed in the 120s AD as part of Hadrian's original frontier scheme and would have functioned as a signalling and observation post manned by small detachments drawn from the nearest auxiliary garrison, probably until later 2nd-century reorganisations saw many central-sector turrets abandoned.

Significance

Historical significance

Its role was purely military and observational, providing intervisibility along the Wall and overwatch of the approaches across the Tyne–Irthing watershed; it carries no particular distinction among the Wall's turrets beyond its place within that systematic frontier surveillance network.

Archaeology

Archaeological record

Very little is recorded specifically for Turret 47A; it has not been the subject of major published excavation, and its remains are slight compared with better-preserved turrets in this sector such as 48A (Willowford East) and 49B (Birdoswald). Standard turret form — a roughly 4 m square internal chamber bonded into the Wall, with a ground-floor doorway and probable timber upper storey — can reasonably be inferred from comparanda.
