Turret 48A (Willowford East) is one of the standard interval observation towers along Hadrian's Wall, situated on the east bank of the River Irthing immediately above the bridge abutment at Willowford. It was built in the 120s AD as part of the original Wall scheme and, like other turrets on this stretch, was occupied into the later 2nd century before being abandoned, with its recess in the Wall blocked up — probably during the Antonine or early Severan reorganisation.

Its position is unusual in that it stood adjacent to the Willowford Bridge, the major crossing of the Irthing carrying the Wall, giving it a role in overseeing both the frontier line and a key engineering structure. It thus combined the standard watch/signalling function of a turret with surveillance of an important river crossing between Turret 48B and the bridge abutment, and on the approach to Milecastle 49 (Harrow's Scar).
The turret was excavated as part of the wider Willowford investigations (notably F.G. Simpson's work in the early 20th century and later reassessments by Bidwell and others), revealing the typical recessed plan with a stone-built ground floor bonded into the curtain wall; finds were modest, consistent with a small garrison detachment. Detailed published material specific to 48A is limited compared with the adjacent bridge and Turret 48B, and much interpretation rests on analogy with its neighbour.
