Nether Denton Roman fort is a Roman military installation situated in Cumberland along the line of the Stanegate road, which served as a significant frontier route in northern Britain during the first and second centuries AD. The fort was constructed to control and protect this important communication and supply line, and was occupied during the later first century and into the second century AD. Associated with the fort was a civilian settlement or vicus, which developed to serve the military garrison and facilitate trade. The Stanegate itself, stretching between the forts of Corbridge and Carlisle, represented a strategic frontier system predating the construction of Hadrian's Wall and remains one of the most important Roman roads in the military geography of Roman Britain.
