Overview

History & context

Turret 55A (Dovecote) was one of the small stone watch towers built at roughly third-of-a-mile intervals along Hadrian's Wall, situated between Milecastles 55 (Low Wall) and 56 (Stanwix Bank) in the western sector of the Wall in Cumbria. Like other turrets on this stretch, it was constructed in the 120s AD as part of Hadrian's frontier scheme and would have functioned as an observation and signalling post manned by a small detachment, probably from the auxiliary garrison of nearby Castlesteads or Birdoswald. Turrets in this sector were generally abandoned or demolished during the later 2nd century, as occurred along much of the central and western Wall.

Significance

Historical significance

As a link in the close-spaced surveillance system between the major forts, Turret 55A contributed to controlled movement across the frontier rather than serving any independent strategic role. It lies in a relatively unstudied stretch of the Wall west of the Irthing, where the curtain was originally built in turf and later rebuilt in stone, making the sequence of its turrets archaeologically informative.

Archaeology

Archaeological record

Very little is published specifically on Turret 55A; its position is largely known from the regular spacing of the Wall's turret system rather than from substantive excavation. No significant artefactual assemblage or structural detail is recorded in the standard surveys (e.g. the Handbook to the Roman Wall), and the site survives, if at all,
