Captain Benjamin Forsyth's rifle company conducted a daring raid across the frozen St. Lawrence River in 1812, attacking Elizabethtown (Brockville), Canada. This operation exemplified American offensive action on the St. Lawrence frontier and demonstrated the mobility of American light infantry early in the War of 1812.
The early republic period saw the United States move from the weak Articles of Confederation to the federal Constitution ratified in 1788, with the Bill of Rights added in 1791.
