The burning of Newark was one of the most controversial US acts of the War of 1812. Gen. McClure ordered the town burned to deny cover to attacking British forces, despite explicit orders forbidding destruction of civilian property. The act provoked the British capture of Fort Niagara, the burning of Lewiston, and the destruction of Buffalo — a chain of retaliatory escalations.
