The loss of Hamilton and Scourge — Chauncey's two best schooners — in a sudden lake squall was the most significant single loss of Chauncey's Lake Ontario squadron. The ships were too top-heavy for lake conditions. The wrecks were discovered in 1973 and remain one of the best-preserved War of 1812 underwater sites, protected by Canadian law.

The Missouri Compromise of 1820 temporarily balanced slave and free states as the nation expanded westward, but embedded the contradiction of slavery in every subsequent territorial debate.
