About this property

The South Side Community Art Center is a community art center in Chicago that opened in 1940 with support from the Works Progress Administration's Federal Art Project in Illinois. Opened in an 1893 mansion in Bronzeville, it became the first black art museum in the United States not affiliated with a historically Black college and has been an important center for developing Chicago's African American artists. Of more than 100 community art centers established by the WPA, this is the only one that remains open. The center was awarded Chicago Landmark status in 1994. Named a "National Treasure" by the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 2017, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2018.
