Agnes Smedley was born in Osgood, Missouri in 1892 and worked as a journalist, writer, and women's rights activist. Raised in a poor miner's family in Missouri and Colorado, she supported the Indian Independence Movement and the Chinese Communist Revolution. She wrote the autobiographical novel Daughter of Earth, published in 1929, which depicted the development of her feminist and socialist views.
