Biography

Akebono Tarō, born in Waimānalo, Hawaii in 1969, was a professional sumo wrestler and professional wrestler. He joined sumo in Japan in 1988 and reached the top division in 1990. After winning consecutive tournament championships in November 1992 and January 1993, he became the first non-Japanese-born wrestler to attain yokozuna, sumo's highest rank. He died on 1 April 2024.
