Kamehameha I was born in Kohala in 1800 and died in May 1819. He served as a military figure and sovereign, and became the first ruler of the Kingdom of Hawaii after conquering the islands. Hawaii contributed a statue of him to the National Statuary Hall Collection in Washington, D.C.
