Biography

Liliʻuokalani was born in Honolulu in 1838 and served as the only queen regnant and last sovereign monarch of the Hawaiian Kingdom, ruling from January 1891 until January 1893, when the kingdom was overthrown in a coup led by the Committee of Safety. She composed "Aloha ʻOe" and other works, and wrote her autobiography, Hawaiʻi's Story by Hawaiʻi's Queen, during her imprisonment following the overthrow. She died in 1917.
