Biography

Martha Jane Canary, known as Calamity Jane, was born in Princeton, Missouri in 1852 and worked as an army scout, frontiersman, and adventurer. She was a sharpshooter and storyteller who knew Wild Bill Hickok, and later performed in Buffalo Bill's Wild West show and appeared at the 1901 Pan-American Exposition. She wore men's clothing and was known for showing compassion to the sick and needy alongside her daredevil activities. She died on August 1, 1903.
