Charles Curtis was born in Topeka, Kansas in 1860 and worked as a lawyer, prosecutor, and politician. He served in the United States House of Representatives and Senate, holding the position of Senate Majority Leader from 1924 to 1929. Curtis then served as the 31st vice president of the United States from 1929 to 1933 under President Herbert Hoover. An enrolled citizen of the Kaw Nation, he was the first Native American to serve in the United States Congress and the first Native American and first multiracial person to serve as vice president.
