Biography
Clifton Curtis Williams Jr. was born in Mobile, Alabama, on September 26, 1932. He served as a naval aviator, test pilot, mechanical engineer, and major in the United States Marine Corps, and was selected as a NASA astronaut. On October 5, 1967, he died in a crash of a T-38 jet trainer he was piloting near Tallahassee, Florida, after departing Patrick Air Force Base; the crash resulted from a mechanical failure that disabled the flight controls, and his ejection seat failed to save him.
