Cordell Hull was born in Olympus, Tennessee, in 1871 and died in 1955. He served as United States secretary of state from 1933 to 1944 under President Franklin D. Roosevelt, holding the position for nearly twelve years. Before his tenure as secretary of state, Hull represented Tennessee in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1907 to 1921 and again from 1923 to 1931, and served as a U.S. senator from 1931 to 1933. He also held a seat in the Tennessee House of Representatives from 1893 to 1897.
