Duke Kahanamoku was born in Honolulu on August 24, 1890. A Hawaiian swimmer and lifeguard, he held the world record in the 100-meter freestyle and won five Olympic swimming medals across 1912, 1920, and 1924. He popularized surfing and later worked as a sheriff and actor. He died on January 22, 1968.
