Biography

Ellen Church was born in Cresco, Iowa in 1904 and trained as both a nurse and pilot. Unable to secure work as a commercial pilot due to her gender, she persuaded Boeing Air Transport that employing nurses as flight-stewardesses would enhance safety and passenger confidence in air travel. The airline's first flight with this arrangement departed on May 15, 1930. Church died in 1965.
