Ellen Hansen Corby was born in Racine, Wisconsin in 1911 and worked as an actress and screenwriter. She appeared in over 200 films and television series between the 1930s and 1990s, and performed on stage. She won three Emmy Awards for playing Esther "Grandma" Walton on the CBS series The Waltons, and received an Academy Award nomination and a Golden Globe Award for her role as Aunt Trina in I Remember Mama (1948).
