Ellison Onizuka was born on June 24, 1946, in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. He served as a military officer, engineer, and astronaut, and flew into space aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery on mission STS-51-C. On January 28, 1986, he died when the Space Shuttle Challenger was destroyed during mission STS-51-L, where he held the position of Mission Specialist.
