Biography

Francis Preserved Leavenworth was born on September 3, 1858, in Mount Vernon, Indiana, and worked as an astronomer. Using a 66-centimeter telescope at the Leander McCormick Observatory in Charlottesville, Virginia, he discovered numerous New General Catalogue objects alongside Frank Muller and Ormond Stone. In 1892 he became Professor of Astronomy at the University of Minnesota and was named Professor Emeritus upon retiring 35 years later. He died on November 12, 1928.
