Biography

Gilbert Stuart was born in December 1755 in North Kingstown, Rhode Island, and worked as a painter and portraitist until his death in July 1828. He began an unfinished portrait of George Washington in 1796, known as the Athenaeum Portrait, which he retained and used to create numerous copies for commissioned patrons in America and abroad. The image of Washington from this painting appeared on the United States one-dollar bill and on postage stamps issued during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
