Biography

Chester Gordon Bell was an electrical engineer and manager born in Kirksville, Missouri in 1934. He joined Digital Equipment Corporation in 1960 and designed several of their PDP machines before leaving in 1966. From 1972 to 1983 he served as Vice President of Engineering at DEC, overseeing development of the VAX computer systems. Later roles included founding Assistant Director of NSF's Computing and Information Science and Engineering Directorate from 1986 to 1987 and researcher emeritus at Microsoft Research from 1995 to 2015.
