Biography

Hope Emerson was born in Hawarden, Iowa, in 1897 and worked as a stage, film, and television actor, as well as a vaudevillian, nightclub performer, and singer. She began acting at age three alongside her mother, and later advertised sheet music by playing piano at a ten-cent store before making her Broadway debut in Lysistrata in 1930. She appeared in plays, radio programs, films, television shows, and commercials, frequently taking villain roles in comedies and dramas. Her performance in Caged became the standard model for women's prison films, and her roles included a circus strongwoman, a masseuse-conspirator, a mail-order bride, and a prison warden. She died on April 24, 1960.
