Jackson Pollock was a painter, draftsperson, and printmaker born in Cody, Wyoming in 1912. He developed a technique of pouring or splashing liquid household paint onto a horizontal canvas, which allowed him to paint from all angles. His approach, called all-over painting and action painting, involved covering the entire canvas using his whole body in a frenetic dancing style. His work divided critics, with some praising the immediacy of creation while others criticized the random effects. He died in 1956.
