He worked as a composer in musical theater and as part of the songwriting team Kander and Ebb, which created scores for 15 musicals including Cabaret (1966) and Chicago (1975). The team also wrote "New York, New York" and received eleven Tony Award nominations, two Academy Award nominations, and five Golden Globe Award nominations.
