Biography
John Searle was born in Denver, Colorado, on July 31, 1932, and died on September 17, 2025. He was a philosopher, linguist, and artificial intelligence researcher who made contributions to the philosophy of language, philosophy of mind, and social philosophy. He taught at the University of California, Berkeley, beginning in 1959, serving as Willis S. and Marion Slusser Professor Emeritus of the Philosophy of Mind and Language and Professor of the Graduate School until June 2019, when his emeritus status was revoked following findings that he had engaged in sexual harassment and retaliation against a former student and employee.
