Mark Lavon Helm was born in Elaine, Arkansas on May 26, 1940, and died on April 19, 2012. He worked as a drummer, singer, mandolinist, and songwriter, achieving fame as drummer and one of three lead vocalists for The Band. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted him in 1994. His vocals and drumming appeared on recordings including "The Weight," "Up on Cripple Creek," and "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down."
