Lurleen Wallace was born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama in 1926 and served as the 46th governor of Alabama from January 1967 until her death in May 1968. She was the first wife of Alabama governor George Wallace, whom she succeeded in office. George Wallace, unable to serve consecutive terms under Alabama's constitution, orchestrated her candidacy in the 1966 gubernatorial election and publicly stated that she would serve as a figurehead while he controlled administrative policies and decisions.
