Marjorie Main was born in Acton, Indiana on February 24, 1890, and died on April 10, 1975. She was an American character actress and singer who began her career in vaudeville and theatre before appearing in films including Dead End, The Women, Dark Command, The Shepherd of the Hills, Meet Me in St. Louis, and Friendly Persuasion. Main worked as a Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer contract player during the 1940s and 1950s and played Ma Kettle in ten films. She was known for playing raucous, rough, and cantankerous women on-screen while being characterized as soft-spoken, shy, and dignified off-screen.
