Biography

Rebecca Lee Crumpler was born in Christiana, Delaware in 1831 and worked as a physician, nurse, and medical writer. She qualified as a doctor of medicine from the New England Female Medical College in 1864, becoming the first African-American female doctor of medicine. In 1883, she published A Book of Medical Discourses, which addressed the prevention and cure of infantile bowel complaints and the life and growth of human beings, and was dedicated to nurses and mothers. She died in 1895.
