Rufus Wilmot Griswold was born in Benson, Vermont in 1815 and worked as an anthologist, editor, poet, and critic across Philadelphia, New York City, and other locations. He left home at fifteen and produced The Poets and Poetry of America in 1842, a comprehensive anthology of American poetry that he revised and expanded throughout his life. He was married three times: his first wife died young, his second marriage ended in a public and controversial divorce, and his third wife left him after that previous divorce was nearly repealed. He died in 1857.
