Biography

Sabin William Carr was born in Dubuque, Iowa in 1904 and competed in pole vault. He won the gold medal in men's pole vault at the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam. In 1927 he set indoor and outdoor world records, becoming the first man to clear 14 feet outdoors that May and the first to clear 14 feet indoors in 1928. Carr later worked in the lumber business in Oakland, California, serving as president of Sterling Lumber Co., and died in 1983.
