Shere Hite was born in St. Joseph, Missouri on November 2, 1942, and died on September 9, 2020. She worked as a sex educator, feminist, women's rights activist, essayist, novelist, sexologist, author, and historian. Her sexological work concentrated on female sexuality, building upon earlier biological studies by Masters and Johnson and Alfred Kinsey. She wrote The Hite Report: A Nationwide Study on Female Sexuality, published in 1976, which became a bestseller, and drew on theoretical, political and psychological works from the feminist movement of the 1970s, including Anne Koedt's essay "The Myth of the Vaginal Orgasm." In 1995, she renounced her United States citizenship to become German.
