Thomas E. Starzl was born in Le Mars, Iowa in 1926 and died in 2017. A surgeon, physician, and scientist, he performed the first human liver transplants. He authored his autobiography, The Puzzle People: Memoirs Of A Transplant Surgeon, published in 1992. A documentary titled "Burden of Genius" about his medical and scientific advances was released in 2017.
