Thomas Riley Marshall was born on March 14, 1854, in North Manchester, Indiana. He practiced law in Indiana and became active in the Democratic Party through campaigning for candidates and organizing rallies. Marshall served as the 27th governor of Indiana and later as the 28th vice president of the United States from 1913 to 1921 under President Woodrow Wilson. During his governorship, he sought to introduce progressive measures into the Indiana Constitution but was prevented from doing so by the Indiana Supreme Court. He died on June 1, 1925.
