Walker Percy was born in Birmingham, Alabama, on May 28, 1916. He worked as a novelist, philosopher, physician, and writer, with interests in philosophy and semiotics. His first novel, The Moviegoer, won the National Book Award for Fiction, and he set several of his philosophical novels in and around New Orleans. He died on May 10, 1990.
