Wendell Willkie was born in Elwood, Indiana in 1892 and worked as a lawyer, corporate executive, and writer. He became the Republican nominee for president in 1940, positioning himself as an interventionist who supported greater American involvement in World War II to aid Britain and the Allies. Franklin D. Roosevelt, the incumbent Democratic president, defeated him in that election with approximately 55 percent of the popular vote and a substantial electoral college margin. Willkie died in 1944.
