William Crawford Gorgas was a physician and medical officer born in Mobile, Alabama in 1854. He served as the 22nd Surgeon General of the U.S. Army from 1914 to 1918. Working in Florida, Havana, and at the Panama Canal, Gorgas controlled mosquito populations to reduce transmission of yellow fever and malaria, applying discoveries made by Cuban physician Carlos J. Finlay. As head of the Panama Canal Zone Sanitation Commission, his measures helped save thousands of lives and supported the canal's construction, though his approach initially met skepticism and resistance.
