William Ellery Channing was born in Newport, Rhode Island, in 1780 and died in 1842. A Christian minister, theologian, pastor, and writer, he delivered sermons and public speeches on liberal theology during the early nineteenth century. His articulation of Unitarian thought appeared prominently in his 1819 sermon given at Jared Sparks's ordination as minister of the First Independent Church of Baltimore. His religious and theological work influenced the New England Transcendentalists, though he rejected what he regarded as the extremes of their views.
