William H. Gass was born in Fargo, North Dakota, in 1924 and worked as a novelist, essayist, critic, and philosophy professor. He wrote three novels, three collections of short stories, a collection of novellas, and seven volumes of essays. Three of his essay collections won National Book Critics Circle Award prizes, while A Temple of Texts received the Truman Capote Award for Literary Criticism. His 1995 novel The Tunnel received the American Book Award, and his 2013 novel Middle C won the William Dean Howells Medal in 2015. He died in 2017.
