Biography

Lawrence Peter Berra, known as Yogi, was born in St. Louis in 1925 and became a professional baseball catcher. He played 19 seasons in Major League Baseball, spending all but his final season with the New York Yankees, and later worked as a manager and coach. As a player, he was selected as an All-Star 18 times, won 10 World Series championships, compiled a career batting average of .285, and hit 358 home runs with 1,430 runs batted in. He won the American League Most Valuable Player Award three times and was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972. Berra died in 2015.
