The Battle

History & Significance

The Battle of Rullion Green on 28 November 1666 was the decisive engagement of the Pentland Rising. General Dalzell's professional government force of dragoons and infantry attacked the exhausted Covenanting rebels on the slopes of the Pentland Hills. The rebels fought stubbornly but were outnumbered and outgunned. About 50 rebels were killed in the battle and a further 36 were subsequently executed, with many more transported to Barbados.
