The Battle

History & Significance

Cromwell arrived before Basing House in October 1645 with the New Model Army and heavy siege artillery. After a brief bombardment that breached the walls, he stormed both the Old House and the New House on 14 October 1645. The garrison of approximately 400 was overwhelmed; several priests were killed; the famous Royalist stronghold was pillaged and burned. Inigo Jones was among those taken prisoner.
