History & Significance

Winchester, the ancient capital of Wessex and the royal treasury, submitted to William without armed resistance shortly after Hastings. Queen Edith, widow of Edward the Confessor and Harold's sister, urged the city to yield. The peaceful surrender preserved the royal treasury and gave William control of the symbolic heart of the old English kingdom.
