In September 1651 General George Monck stormed Dundee with English forces. The city was taken by assault and subjected to a brutal sack in which approximately 800-1,000 civilians and soldiers were killed. The city's considerable merchant wealth was plundered. The sack of Dundee was one of the most violent actions of the entire Cromwellian conquest of Scotland and left a lasting memory of English occupation.
