History & Significance

Earl Robert of Gloucester's landing in England in 1139 from Normandy was preceded by actions at Wareham, an important Dorset port. The castle at Wareham changed hands during the early phase of the Anarchy. Control of the port was significant for communication with Normandy and Anjou. Stephen garrisoned it at various points but it fell to imperialist control.
