The Grant clan of Strathspey maintained a pro-government position in 1689, providing a buffer between the Jacobite Highlands to the west and the Lowlands to the east. Jacobite raiding parties — primarily from the Mackenzies and northern clans — probed into Grant territory seeking recruits and supplies. The Grants resisted these incursions. Strathspey's pro-government stance was partly due to Grant of Grant's personal loyalty to William III and partly to the clan's economic interests in maintaining peace in the fertile upper Spey valley.
