History & Significance

Royalist cavalry attempting to move south from Yorkshire were intercepted at Sherburn-in-Elmet by Parliamentary forces under Colonel Rossiter. The engagement dispersed the last significant Royalist cavalry force in Yorkshire. After Naseby and Marston Moor, this skirmish effectively ended organised Royalist mounted operations in the county, leaving only garrison work for the remaining holdouts.
