The Battle

History & Significance

The Grants of Grant were unusual among Highland clans in consistently supporting the government cause rather than the Jacobite one. In 1689, Jacobite recruiting parties attempted to press the Grants to join Dundee rising. The Grant chief refused and ejected the Jacobite agents with armed support. Castle Grant was secured against Jacobite intimidation. The episode illustrates that not all Highland clans followed the romantic narrative of automatic Jacobite loyalty.
